“Gravitational Collapse” started as a demo from our friend Cecil, who used to be in a band with us called Beati Paoli. The demo was pretty basic, just the chords going over and over with the lead line on top and although I thought it was great, it took us a long time to figure out what to do with it. Eventually we changed the sound from the original shoegaze vibe to more of a dancey, electronic one, though we kept the general tone of melancholic prettiness.
As far as the lyrics go, I don’t want to say too much in favor of keeping things a bit ambiguous. I did have a certain person In mind, but I think the song’s general theme of losing control is open enough to apply to many different situations. I don’t remember writing the whistling part.

lyrics
It’s coming back again
And I don’t want it
This feeling in my head
And I don’t want it
But when gravity collapses totally
And utterly…with such finality
My wants and needs
Thrown into sharp relief
And so it goes, so it goes…
My mind is not my own
I can’t control it
My thoughts I think alone
I can’t control it
But when gravity collapses totally…
I wish someone else could see them
I wish someone else could see them just like me
I wish someone else could feel them
I wish someone else could feel them just like me
But no one sees
And no one feels
How gravity collapses totally
And utterly…with such finality
My hopes and dreams
Thrown into sharp relief
Here it comes again…
I put a record on…my favorite album
The film that’s on TV…my favorite movie
It soothes me…and finally I see
When gravity collapses totally
And utterly…crushing finality
How I can breathe
How I can feel relief
Here it comes…
